As Nghe An is parts of the giant Truong Son Mountain Range, 83% of its area is mountainous, making its topography highly complicated. The terrain has a descending slope from North-West to South-East; is separated by mountains, hills, rivers, streams, etc. into many small valleys. In terms of height, the 2,711m high Pulaileng Peak in Ky Son District is most noticeable, while the 0.2m high plains in Yen Thanh Districts are the most humble. Besides, Nghe An also has a highly dense system of rivers with a total length of 9828km.
With a monsoonal tropical climate, Nghe An enjoys its 4 distinct seasons: Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter! While from April to August, it is affected by the dry Southwestern winds, the province experiences the humid and cold Northeastern winds during winter. However, the weather is still favorable most of the time. The annual average precipitation is 1670mm and the annual average temperature is 25.2oC. As other provinces in Vietnam, Nghe An has a high level of humidity: about 86 – 87%.
As a result of its diverse population, Nghe An is a kingdom of many traditional festivals organized on the rivers such as Cau Ngu Festival, Ruoc Hen Festival. Besides, there are also many festivals illustrating the local myths, tales, and important historical events such as the Cuong Temple Festival, the Van Loc Village Festival, the Lotus Village Festival, etc. Apart from these festivals, tourists can also fill up their time quickly in Nghe An by visiting 200 historical and cultural sites of the province, including the Kim Lien Village - the birthplace of President Ho Chi Minh. In addition to the province’s dynamic cultural aspects, visitors are also enchanted by its natural beauty. Indeed, Nghe An has more than 82km of coastline with myriad beautiful beaches that attract both domestic and international tourists. Sen Village
Like other normal rural villages in Vietnam, Sen village is quite tranquil, peaceful and poetic with green bamboo, public well, temple’ ground where festivals or crucial occasions of the village taking place. The village landscape is further adorned by numerous mountains far away that are hidden in vague cloud and blue sky. There is also a fragrant lotus lake at the beginning of Sen village, in between the way to Chua Village which is mother’s homeland of President Ho Chi Minh.
Travelers come to this village mostly to visit the house where Uncle Ho has grown up before he travelled abroad the find the way to rescue Vietnam from colonization. The house was built by donation and effort of local residents in 1901 to celebrate high result in national examination of Uncle Ho’s father Nguyen Sinh Sac. It has been preserved with almost original structure and design, with all simple objects of a Confucianism family like traditional brushes or ink boxes, and popular items that can be seen in any house in rural area such as bamboo mat, trays or rice mortar. Around the house is a lush garden with numerous green plants, including many souvenir trees grown by guests who have visited this place.
Cua Lo Beach
Situated in Nghe An Province, Cua Lo Beach is among the most beautiful beaches in the northern region of Vietnam. Just 18km away from the center of Vinh city, Cua Lo Beach is the magnet for almost all domestic tourists from both north and center of the country.
This 10km long beach is famous for its white sand and blue water, outlined by a stunning pine forest and coconut tree-lined shore.
Cua Lo is also renowned for its surrounding islands. Not far away from the coast are three gorgeous islands named Hon Ngu, Hon Chu and Hon Mat. To the north is Lan Chau Island and to the south east is Song Ngu island. These islands are not only striking spots but also serve as the shield, which protects Cua Lo Beach from storms and strong ocean wind. Visitors can easily get to these islands in few minutes with boats hired from operator at the seashore.
Quynh Phuong Rock Bank
Quynh Phuong Rock Bank is a spectacular natural wonder which has been gaining great popularity recently. Full of naturally sculpted stones of all sizes, the bank is 1km in length. It provides any visitor with a terrific view of the sea and myriad surprises as they start to unfold the mystery of the unique rocks. Indeed, besides the small pools of water, there are several footprints scattered on these rocks as well.
According to some local inhabitants, once upon a time, there was an unknown man who earned to link Quynh Lap and Quynh Phuong communes together. He worked day and night, carrying soil and rocks from the highest mountain in Quynh Lap to the Lizard Mountain in Quynh Phuong. He used his hair to transport all rocks and soil, and then laid the rocks to form a road on which he could carry the soil. However, one day, he slipped and left his large footprint on the highest block of rocks, which accounts for the strange footprint that we see nowadays. After that, he gave up his will and disappeared, but his footprint has become a major attraction later. Today, even though it has been worn by waves after centuries, the footprint still remains its original shape with five “toes.”
Bach Ma Temple
Bach Ma Temple was built to dedicate to General Phan Da, a talented young man who contributed greatly to the glorious victory of King Le Lo over Ming intruders in the 15th century. According to local tales, Phan Da came from Chi Linh hamlet in Vo Liet commune. His talent displayed at very young age. When the famous Lam Son army of Le Loi came to Nghe An in 1424 to build their general headquarters, Phan Da immediately asked to join the army. His intelligence was easily spotted by the leaders of the army and they soon assigned him an important position.
During the battles, Phan Da was always accompanied by his loyal white horse named “Thien Ly Ma” (the Thousand-Mile Horse), which always supported and helped him gain victory. As a result, the fame of Phan Da spread widely and people started referring to him respectfully as the White-Horse God. Even after his death, people still believed that his spirit continued to bless and save the country. A temple was erected to dedicate to this courageous general and his horse, Bach Ma.
