A part of the South-Western Region of Vietnam, Dong Thap is a province with a highly developed agriculture industry. It adjoins Cambodia to the North with 4 border gates (Thong Binh, Dinh Ba, My Can, ThuongPhuoc), Vinh Long Province and Can Tho City to the South, An Giang Province to the West, and Long An plus TienGiang Provinces to the East.
The capital city of Dong Thap is Cao Lanh, which located 162km away from Ho Chi Minh City. With a total area of 3376.4 km2 and a population of 1667.8 thousand people (2006), this is one of the most important provinces in southern Vietnam.
A typical province in the Cuu Long Delta, Dong Thap has a complex system of rivers, channels, springs, as well as big lakes and ponds. With a length of 132km, Tien River is the biggest river there, along which many channels are built to transport water to the fields. In a nutshell, taking advantages of its large water body, Dong Thap has developed a very convenient transportation system. Dong Thap has a typical tropical climate with 2 distinctive seasons: the rainy season from May to November and the dried season from December to April. The annual average temperature is pretty high, around 26.6oC.
The Revered Nguyen Sinh Sac Historical Site
If you ever do a research about Vietnam, you are most likely to stumble upon a giant name, Ho Chi Minh. Intelligent and courageous, he is considered by the Vietnamese people as the greatest leader of all time. Interestingly, on your trip to Dong Thap, you can easily expand your knowledge about this man by visiting the Revered Nguyen Sinh Sac Historical Site. Don’t be too excited yet. This site was built to commemorate not Ho Chi Minh, but his revered father – Nguyen Sinh Sac! Located right in Cao Lanh City, this historical site has been ranked by the National Cultural and Information Department in 1992 as one of the most important cultural and architectural complexes in Dong Thap Province.
Every lunar year, on the 27th day of the 10th month, people from everywhere gather here to celebrate the death anniversary of the revered Nguyen Sinh Sac. Even though this has become a formal event recently, the celebration still has a very festive spirit that can cheer up any eager participant.
Tram Chim National Park
Spreading over an area of 7 villages (Tan Cong Sinh, Phu Duc, Phu Tho, Phu Thanh A, Phu Thanh B, Phu Hiep) and Tram Chim town in Tam Nong District, the Tram Chim National Park is a miniature of the Dong Thap Muoi region, featuring a broad and diverse range of animals and plants in the Southern Vietnam.
The total area of Tram Chim National Park is more than 7500 ha, housing as many as 200 types of birds which make up ¼ the bird population in Vietnam. Some of these birds have been put in the Red Book for a long time. The most typical and most well-known one is the Red-crown Crane, one of the last 15 crane pieces in the world. Normally, a crane has a height of more than 1.7 m, gray feathers, long neck, red head and wide wings. Unlike other types of bird in the region, these cranes only find food on land. During the rainy season when the level of water in Dong Thap rise continuously, they have to look for food in other places. Thus, you can only see these birds there from December to June.
Tan Quy Dong Flower Garden
The Tan Quy Dong Flower Garden is, without a doubt, one of the major attractions of Dong Thap Province. Located in Tan Quy Dong District, this flower garden covers an area of 60ha, featuring not only the most beautiful flowers but also the most precious plants in the Southern Vietnam. Among all of them, roses and amber tree are the ones that bring fame to the garden.
As the singing of the playful swallows marks the beginning of spring, Tan Quy Dong Flower Garden puts on itself a new colourful outfit. Hundreds of cars and buses bring people from everywhere to this wonderful destination. This is indubitably the best time to visit the garden in the year, when, unlike in Western country, the weather is so nice with sunshine and breezes.
Trolling inside the endless garden, beside many precious plants that are hundreds year old, you can find many familiar ones such as star-fruit tree, fig tree, or areca, etc. Under the dexterous hands of the craftsmen, they have transformed into valuable pieces of bonsai arts.
However, it is not to misunderstand that you can only visit the garden during the spring, because no matter when you come to Tan Quy Dong Flower Garden, you can find a forest of flowers with all colors and fragrances possible. Especially, this place takes pride in its 50 types of roses such as Black Baccarat Rose, Cleopatra Rose, Elizabeth Rose, Mascara Rose, etc. The like-no-other setting of the garden will ensure you the most romantic walk ever!
