Nowhere in Vietnam is changing as fast as Danang. For decades it had a reputation as a provincial backwater, but big changes are ongoing. Stroll along the Han riverfront and you'll find gleaming new modernist hotels, apartments and restaurants are emerging. Spectacular new bridges now span the Han river and in the north of the city the landmark new D-City is rising from the flatlands.
Geography
Da Nang City is located in middle of Central Viet Nam, between Ha Noi and Ho Chi Minh City, separated from Laos by the western Truong Son Mountains. It is surrounded by Thua Thien-Hue along the northern border and Quang Nam on the southern border. It is embraced by the East Sea with 150km of seacoast.
Climate: Da Nang is located in the zone of typical tropical monsoon, temperate and equable climate. The city's weather bears the combination of the north and the south climate characters with the inclination to the former. There are two seasons: the wet from August to December and the dry season from January to July, cold waves are occasional but they are of average and short lasting.
Tourism
Da Nang is an ancient land, closely related with the Sa Huynh cultural traditions. Many imposing, palaces, towers, temples, citadels and ramparts, the vestiges from 1st to 13th are still to be seen in Cham Museum. This fine museum has the world’s largest collection of Cham artefacts, housed in buildings that marry French-colonial architecture with Cham elements. Founded in 1915 by the École Française d’Extrême Orient, it has more than 300 pieces on display including altars, lingas, garudas, apsaras, Ganeshas and images of Shiva, Brahma and Vishnu – all dating from the 5th to 15th centuries. The treasures come from Dong Duong (Indrapura), Khuong My, My Son, Tra Kieu and other sites. Note that the museum’s organisation and English captions could be better, so it’s worth hiring a well-informed guide (or pick up one of the guidebooks at the museum shop). There are also exhibits focusing on Cham culture today, with a handful of contemporary artefacts and photos of the Kate Festival (the Cham New Year).
Da Nang has other various interesting attractions as Ba Na Tourist Resort, Ngu Hanh Son (Marble Mountains) as well as the Linh Ung Pagoda, Han River, and My An, Non Nuoc beaches, stretching on dozens of kilometers...
Only 13 km away from the center of Da Nang City, Son Tra Peninsula belongs to Son Tra District. This is a typical Vietnam tourism magnet along the coastline: fantastic, untouched natural scene with transparent sea, white sand, and mysterious primitive jungle with a vast diversity of plants and animals.
There are many famous beaches there, some of them have gained quite a fame recently such as North Beach, South Beach (whose names explain their position on the peninsula), and Buddha Beach (whose extraordinary name really interests hundreds of people). These beaches take turns to embrace the giant primitive jungle, which houses as many as thousands of precious plants and animals. Under the surface layer of the cool, refreshing seawater live a variety of fascinating coral reefs, which enable scuba diving services to develop in a steady, fast rate in the last few years.
If you ever have a chance to visit Son Tra Peninsula, do not forget to stay at one of the villages built on the mountains; those comfortablevillages not only overlook the beautiful beaches and jungles, but also provide you a fresh and invigorating atmosphere. Besides, you can always enjoy fishing and get to know the lives of the inhabitants whenever you want. Da Nang means Son Tra peninsula, so come and get the real feeling of a different Vietnam.
